Ed Sheeran shows how important the world of Pokémon is in his life with his nostalgic new song 'Celestial'.
The song refers to the comfort that Pokémon continue to give him, for which he has had an undying love since he was in elementary school.
"You make me feel like my troubled heart is a million miles away / You make me feel like I'm drunk on the stars and we're dancing in space," Ed Sheeran sings.
In the music video for 'Celestial' his daily life alternates between real life and his imagination, where he is aided by his Pokémon pals in an animated world.
Pokémon such as Pikachu, Charmander, Snorlax, Lapras, Bulbasaur, Eevee, Charizard, Machamp, Hypno and his favorite of all, Squirtle, pass through the screen.
The music video culminates with Ed Sheera creating a new song for his Pokémon pals and then entering a fully animated dream world where he reenacts a scene from 1999's Pokémon: The First Movie.
Ed Sheeran heroically steps between the two most powerful Pokémon, Mewtwo and Mew, in order to stop their destructive battles.
The video for "Celestial" mainly pays homage to the First Generation of Pokémon, as that was when Ed Sheeran fell in love with the franchise.
However, it does make a mention of the eighth generation of Pokémon, including the original three Pokémon of the game 'Sword and Shield', which was released in 2019: Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble.
“I loved the whole world they created, they kept me busy if negative things were happening in my life/school that I wanted to avoid. It was a world I could escape to and I've been playing Pokémon ever since," Ed Sheeran said.
“I started with Pokémon cards when the craze hit elementary schools when I was about 7 years old. Then the TV series came out on TV, so I tried to record it on the same VHS tape every week,” he recalled.
“After that me and my brother shared a Game Boy and Pokémon Blue. I got a Game Boy Color with Pokémon Yellow for my eighth birthday, the word obsession is an understatement. Turning 31, I still have the same Game Boy Color and still play Pokémon Silver on long haul flights. I really really love it,” she wrote.
Ed Sheeran's new song 'Celestial' will be featured in the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games that will be released on November 18th.
