Olivia Rodrigo's debut has shaken the music world.
Olivia Rodrigo's first solo single "Drivers License" was released by Geffen Records / Universal Music last Friday (January 8th) and from day one it made a sensation on social media and digital platforms.
Spotify confirmed that Olivia Rodrigo made history as the "Drivers License" broke the record for the most non-Christmas song with the most streams in one day.
On January 12, the "Drivers License" collected 13.4 million streams from around the world and the next day, on January 13, it continued, setting another record with 13.6 million streams.
Olivia Rodrigo's debut single is in third place in the overall list of most streams on Spotify in 24 hours, just behind Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" (17.2 million streams) and Wham!'s "Last Christmas"! (15.8 million streams).
With each passing day, the "Drivers License" is gaining more and more popularity thanks to its dynamic lyrics, emotional music and the moving interpretation of the 17-year-old singer and actress, known for her leading role in the series "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series »by Disney +.
In a relatively slow start to 2021, where pop music is trying to find its footing again after the festive season, the "Drivers License" seems to have shaken the world.
Spotify's Global Hits leader Becky Bass spoke to Billboard about the unprecedented response to Olivia Rodrigo's first song.
"There is no real comparison here. You have songs like "Dynamite" by BTS and "7 Rings" by Ariana Grande that were released scoring incredible numbers on the first day. "And then you have younger artists, like Tones And I with 'Dance Monkey' or Lil Nas X with 'Old Town Road', who took a little longer to develop into top hits," he says.
"But from my experience - and as a group we've discussed this before - we've never seen anything like it, where you have a younger artist who has just made his debut in such a dominant way and continues to grow," she told Olivia Rodrigo.
"We said, 'Wow, the numbers for the first day are huge!' And then it was bigger on the second day, bigger on the third day… So it really seems to be unprecedented and probably unprecedented ", he emphasizes.
