OMD at Release Athens X SNF Nostos 2023

The creators of "Enola Gay" and "Electricity" in Greece.

Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark will join Röyksopp and M83 on June 21 at the Water Square as part of Release Athens X SNF Nostos 2023.

In 2023, Release Athens and SNF Nostos of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) join forces, presenting three great festival days on two stages.

On Wednesday June 21, Release Athens X SNF Nostos, after headliners Röyksopp and Tash Sultana, as well as M83, Dub Inc. and Groundation, welcomes yet another truly great band.

OMD, or Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (as is their full name), one of the first and most successful synth pop bands of all time, will take to the stage of Water Square.

Release Athens X SNF Nostos takes place on June 20, 21 and 23 and brings big names of the world and Greek scene to two stages, in the Square of Nero and the Clearing of the SNFCC, giving us the opportunity to experience an exciting concert three days that is an integral part of Release Athens 2023.

For Wednesday, June 21, the overall lineup is as follows:

• Water Square / Röyksopp, M83, Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark
• SNFCC Illuminated / Tash Sultana, Dub Inc., Groundation

The performances of the two headliners at the Water Square and the SNFCC's Xephoto will not coincide, while sufficient transition time from one stage to the other will be ensured.

Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD), the synth-pop duo from Wirral, England, pioneered pop, combining massive commercial success with experimentation.

Influenced more by Kraftwerk than by the sound of Great Britain in the late '70s, Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys wanted to be both ABBA and Stockhausen from the start (as they stated from the start on their label), teasing and mutating the conventions of pop songs.

Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark rocketed to the top and shaped the musical landscape of the 80s.

Their first album with the unsurpassed single "Electricity", their second album "Organisation" (1980), with the anti-war anthem "Enola Gay", the hugely successful Architecture & Morality (1982), with a legendary trio of great singles (" Souvenir', 'Joan Of Arc', 'Maid Of Orleans'), but also 'Dazzle Ships' (1983) are reference points for bands such as The Killers, Arcade Fire and Radiohead.

After a period of absence, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark reunited in 2007 and have been abhorred by audiences and critics alike with their sold-out shows.

Their latest album, 'The Punishment of Luxury' (2017), proved that the band is one of the few names of its generation that can still create music that inspires.

Release Athens

Release Athens started in 2016 and since then has been one of the most important summer music events in Athens, but also in the whole of Greece, with the main venue being Water Square, a wonderful place located next to the sea and at the same time a few minutes away from the center of city.

It has hosted very big names of the world music scene in the previous years, such as Iggy Pop, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Slipknot, PJ Harvey, Pet Shop Boys, Judas Priest, Jamiroquai, London Grammar, Alice In Chains, Parov Stelar, Sigur Ros, Damian Marley, Liam Gallagher, Richard Ashcroft, among many more.

Release Athens returns for the 6th time with an even bigger lineup and with its motto "Making Memories Together", faithful to the principle that has governed it since the first day: Artists, audience and contributors to the festival shape, all together, the unique experiences and the memories that will accompany us forever.

2023 SNF Nostos

The music program is just one of the aspects of the SNF Nostos multi-collective open event of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), which this year takes place from June 20 to 23 at the SNFCC, on the topic of Mental Health.

As every year, the program includes the SNF Dialogues, the SNF Nostos Conference, the evening race SNF Nostos Run, as well as a parallel artistic program. Learn more about 2023 SNF Nostos at snfnostos.org.
