Elton John's Broadway musical cancelled after under a week

Elton John’s Broadway musical has been canceled less than a week after its debut.

The production, inspired by the life of televangelist Tammy Faye Messner, premiered on November 14 but struggled with ticket sales following lackluster early reviews.

The 77-year-old music icon composed the score for the show, while Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, 46, wrote the lyrics.

Although the musical had seen moderate success during its run in London’s West End, Tammy Faye: A New Musical failed to gain traction in its New York run. Producers confirmed the show will close on December 8.

According to a source cited by Mail Online, the musical didn’t resonate with New York audiences.

“From the start, there were concerns about whether the storyline would translate well for Broadway,” the insider revealed.

The source added that the 1,700-seat venue was attracting only 300 attendees per night, describing it as a disappointing outcome for Elton John.

Poor initial reviews reportedly sealed the show’s fate. “The opening night feedback was underwhelming,” the insider said. “It became clear the production might not survive the season.”

The New York Times described the musical as “strangely bland,” while Variety labeled it a “misguided West End import.”
