Coldplay: The surprise for Elton John in the last concert of his career

"We're so grateful for everything you've done for us," Chris Martin told Elton John.

Coldplay paid tribute to Elton John during the last stop of the legendary singer's 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour' in Sweden.

As Elton John completed five decades of live performances at Stockholm's Tele2 Arena on Saturday 8 July, Coldplay, who were simultaneously performing in Gothenburg, Sweden, appeared on screen via live link to pay their respects to the living legend.

After Chris Martin performed a stirring cover of 'Rocket Man' with his band, he shared some warm words about Elton John's remarkable career.

"Elton, can you hear us, from Gothenburg?" said Chris Martin as the screens showed Elton John at his own concert in Stockholm.

“Here we are in Gothenburg with everyone here, greeting. Do you see us, Mr. Elton?” he continued. Elton John then replied with a smile: "I can see you."

“Elton, from all of us here, from all the bands and all the artists you've loved and inspired and helped, we just love you so much. We are so grateful for everything you have done for us, for everything you have done with the AIDS Foundation. Every time you were kind to anybody,” Chris Martin said.

"For everything you've done for LGBTQI people. For everything you've done for fashion and eyewear. For all you have done for sexuality, love and dressing up in dresses. For what you've done for the music, for what Bernie (Taupin) has done for the lyrics, for what your band has done in the thousands of concerts you've played," he continued.

“We love you so much, happy retirement and we will miss you so much, man. This is where Gothenburg goes crazy," concluded Chris Martin, as the crowd cheered and chanted Elton John's name.

Before launching into "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," the final song of Saturday's concert in Sweden, Elton John took a moment to reflect on his spectacular career.

“I've had the most wonderful career, beyond imagination. Fifty two years of pure joy playing music. How lucky am I to play music? But you know, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you if it wasn't for you,” he told the crowd.

“You bought the singles, the CDs, the albums, the tapes, but most importantly, you bought the concert tickets. You know how much I love performing live. It's been my life singing for you guys. You were absolutely wonderful,” she noted.

Elton John's 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour' started in September 2018 in North America and performed 330 concerts around the world.

In January, it became the highest-grossing tour in Billboard Boxscore history, surpassing Ed Sheeran's 'The Divide Tour'.

As of June 18, 'Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour' has now grossed $910.4 million, becoming the first tour to break the $900 million barrier.

Elton John continued: “I'll never tour again, but I might do something in the future – something unique – but that's miles away. I want to appreciate my family, my sons, my husband, everything. I earned it. And I don't regret it tonight."

"I want to thank the band, the crew, everyone. I will miss you very much, but I will see you much sooner than you think. I love you guys!” he added.
