Canadian Music Week has presented The Weeknd with CMW's 2022 Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award in recognition of his long-standing contribution to philanthropic initiatives.
The CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Award is presented to Canadian artists, duos or bands in recognition of their social activism and benevolent support of humanitarian issues and causes.
The Slaight Family Foundation will make a $50,000 donation to a charity of The Weeknd's choice.
"The fact that this is a Canadian award really moves me," said The Weeknd.
"Allan and The Slaight Family Foundation are known across the country for their generous philanthropy and the recognition means a lot to me and I am honored to be recognized alongside the legendary Canadian artists who have received this award before me," he added .
The Weeknd is the first musician to receive both the Allan Slaight Impact Award and the CWM Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award.
The 32-year-old singer received the Allan Slaight Impact Award, which is presented to an outstanding musician, duo or group that has made a positive impact through their talent and philanthropy in the field of music, on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2014.
"Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye's global success makes every Canadian proud. What Abel has done with his success is something we can be doubly proud of – and that is improving the lives of people in need, in Canada and around the world. His altruism, in a word, is exemplary,” said Gary Slaight, President and CEO of The Slaight Family Foundation.
"Throughout his working life, my father, Allan Slaight, has made it his family mission to ensure that our financial achievements are used for the betterment of our community and beyond," he continued.
"Abel's support of organizations, foundations and initiatives that work to make the world a better place is in line with my father's desire to do the same," he said.
"In recognition of his philanthropy, Abel Tesfaye is admirably deserving of the 2022 CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Award and on behalf of myself and our family we honor him for his philanthropy, humanity and unspeakable kindness," it said.
