Women are making their mark on the 2023 MTV VMA nominations.
The nominations for the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards have been announced.
Taylor Swift leads with 8 nominations, followed by SZA with 6 nominations, Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith with 5 nominations each and BLACKPINK, Diddy and Shakira with 4 nominations each everyone.
Six of the seven nominees for Video of the Year – Doja Cat's 'Attention', Miley Cyrus' 'Flowers', Nicki Minaj's 'Super Freaky Girl', Olivia Rodrigo's 'Vampire', 'Kill Bill' by SZA and Taylor Swift's 'Anti-Hero' – are women.
The seventh nomination belongs to a collaboration that made history – "Unholy," which made Sam Smith and Kim Petras the first openly non-binary and openly transgender solo artists, respectively, to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 .
Notably, for the first time since the MTV Video Music Awards established the Artist of the Year category in 2017, all the nominees are women – Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Karol G, Nick Minaj, Shakira and Taylor Swift.
It is also the first time that two of the nominees for Artist of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards come from the world of Latin music. The first Latin artist to be nominated in this category was Bad Bunny, who also won the award last year.
In addition to her nomination for Artist of the Year, Taylor Swift is up for seven awards at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards with her hit "Anti-Hero": Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Better Visual Effects and Better Editing.
Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar are both nominated for Best Director at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.
Kendrick Lamar is nominated for the video for "Count Me Out," which he co-directed with Dave Free.
Both Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar have already won twice in that category with music videos they directed or co-directed. Taylor Swift received the award for directing 'The Man' (2020) and 'All Too Well (The Short Film)' (2022) and Kendrick Lamar for co-directing 'Alright' (2015) and "Humble." (2017).
Despite her six nominations, SZA is not up for Artist of the Year.
SZA's hit 'Kill Bill' is up for five awards – Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Direction, Best Art Direction and Best Editing, while 'Shirt' is nominated for Best R&B.
This year marks an impressive record with 35 artists being nominated for the first time at the MTV Videos Music Awards, including Kim Petras (5 nominations), Metro Boomin and Rema (3 nominations each) and Ayra Starr, GloRilla, Ice Spice, Peso Pluma, Reneé Rapp and Yung Miami (2 nominations each).
Also nominated for the first time are Aespa, boygenius, Burna Boy, Davido, Eslabon Armado, Fletcher, Fifty Fifty, JVKE, Lauren Spencer Smith, Musa Keys, PinkPantheress, Saucy Santana, Stephen Sanchez and Toosii.
Competing for Best New Artist at the 2023 MTV Videos Music Awards are GloRilla, Ice Spice, Peso Pluma, Reneé Rapp, Kaliii and PinkPantheress.
The MTV Videos Music Awards added a new category this year – for Best Afrobeats. This is the third genre-specific category the VMAs have added this century, following Best Latin (2006) and Best K-pop (2019).
The other five genre-specific MTV VMA categories were all added in the last century – Best Rock (1989), Best Alternative (1991), Best R&B (1993), Best Pop and Best Hip-Hop (both 1999). .
The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday, September 12.
Audiences can vote for their favorite artists in 15 gender-neutral categories from Tuesday, August 8 through Friday, September 1 at vote.mtv.com.
Voting for Best New Artist will remain active until the live show. Nominations for categories where the winner is announced via social networks, such as Band of the Year and Song of the Summer, will be announced at a later date.
