Queen's Brian May listens to P!nk and Avril Lavigne

Brian May's revelation about his music preferences.

Queen's Brian May has revealed he's an unexpected fan of P!nk and Avril Lavigne, but admitted he barely has time to listen to music.

The 75-year-old guitarist also praised Avril Lavigne, commenting that her music is "fresh".

Answering questions from Guardian newspaper readers, Brian May said that when he is in the car he listens to albums by Avril Lavigne, P!nk and Foo Fighters and can't get enough of their songs.

"I'm ashamed to say how little I sit and listen to music," the Queen guitarist initially said.

“I'm usually making music or working in some other way - in astrophysics or wildlife - and I have three children and seven grandchildren. I don't have much time left!”, he explained.

“But I have a few CDs in the car that I listen to all the time. P!nk is one of them. I adore her. She is amazing. I listen to Foo Fighters a lot and I like Avril Lavigne – I never get bored of her, I always find her music fresh. It has an exuberance that I like," he continued.

Brian May has also stated that if he wasn't in Queen, he would have loved to have been a member of the Beatles and believes it would not be an "easy" mission.

When asked which other band he would like to be in, he replied: “The Beatles, probably. I'm sure it wouldn't have been easy being a Beatle, but that incredible level of creativity, I could understand."

Brian May admitted he was moved by seeing the Beatles in the studio in Peter Jackson's 'Get Back' documentary series because it reminded him of the intense moments he spent in the studio with the late Freddie Mercury and the rest of Queen.

"I've seen a lot of 'Get Back.' I was a bit sad watching the first part because it reminded me of us – sometimes Queen in the studio were like, 'Here we are and things don't quite match,'" he said.

“I felt like it was quite a painful one – but in the second part, I felt like they were really finding each other again. It's a manual on how to be in the studio," he explained.

Back to the original question, Brian May shared his alternate choice of band he would like to join.

“If it wasn't The Beatles, it could have been Led Zeppelin. If they would let me join them,” he said.
