Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez, Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, Shawn Mendes and Halsey are among the 160 artists and other personalities who co-authored the open letter #BansOffOurBodies. Planned Parenthood.
In a full-page ad published today in the New York Times, the artists condemn the recent leaked US Supreme Court opinion threatening to abolish the right to abortion in the country introduced in 1973 with a landmark ruling in the Roe v. Wade case.
"The Supreme Court plans to overturn the decision, removing the constitutional right to abortion. "Our ability to plan our future and control our bodies depends on our ability to access sexual and reproductive health services, including abortion," the letter said.
The letter is also signed by Camila Cabello, Demi Lovato, Hailey Bieber, Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart, Ariana DeBose, Phoebe Bridgers, Meghan Trainor, Finneas, Clairo, Noah Cyrus, King Princess and Angel Olsen.
Artists encourage their fans to join them and speak out in favor of the right of access to sexual and reproductive health services, including abortions.
The release of the open letter comes ahead of Bans Off Our Bodies Action Day on May 14, where hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend rallies, marches and events across the United States in support of abortion rights. The events are organized by organizations such as Planned Parenthood, Women’s March, UltraViolet, MoveOn, Liberate Abortion, SEIU and others.
"If the Supreme Court abolishes the constitutional right to safe, legal abortion, young people are expected to lose the most," said Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
"So many of us - growing up with the realization that the right to abortion was a statutory law - could never have imagined that our own children would have fewer rights and less freedom for their bodies and their future," he continued.
"What we see in young people from all walks of life is that they do not back down - neither today nor ever. "Like the artists who signed this ad, their determination to keep bans away from their bodies is a source of hope in a dark age, and we are determined to continue to fight with them, for them."
According to Planned Parenthood, if the 1973 ruling is overturned, "26 of its states are likely to ban abortions, leaving 36 million women and other people who can become pregnant without access to abortion."
"These dangerous abortion bans will disproportionately affect those who already face barriers to health care due to systemic racism and discrimination, including black women and Latins. "More than half of black women in America live in the southern states, most of whom are prepared to ban abortions."
