Couple raising money to buy rights to 'Last Christmas' to pull it from release

The pair plan to send the song's dies to a nuclear waste repository, "where they will remain for at least two million years."
Christmas songs are often divisive, but one couple hate Wham's 'Last Christmas' so much! who raised £50,000 to buy the rights to the song so he could take it down.

Speaking to the South West News Service, Hannah Mazetti said her distaste for the song began when she was 20 (she's now 33) working in a cafe in Oxford, where her boss played 'Last Christmas' ad nauseam.

"The owner of the coffee shop had planned a super hot festive season and had made his own CD with a series of 'hits'. "He only came here and there, so he didn't fully appreciate the pain the rest of the staff felt when 'Last Christmas' was played for the 111th time in one day," he recalled.

Mazetti later said that she and her husband, Tomas, came up with the idea to buy the rights to the song when a friend informed them that such an effort could (theoretically) succeed.

Of the genesis of their venture, he said: “It started 'last Christmas' – no pun intended – when we asked friends how much they'd be willing to pay to never hear this song again. It turned out they would give quite a lot, and when the song started playing this November, they reminded us of that."

"Then someone told us that it was theoretically possible to buy the rights to the song and then remove it from all streaming platforms! We asked among our friends and word spread. It's fun because people either love or hate this idea! Maybe next Christmas will be the "last Christmas"!", he continued.

Last Christmas - Wham!
So far, they have raised just over £51,500 from around 330 contributors.

Unfortunately for them, they are still a few million pounds short. The rights to "Last Christmas" belong to Warner Chappell Music UK and, according to the Daily Mail, their price is estimated at 15-20 million pounds.

The pair have set their sights on the low end of that estimate. Should they succeed in acquiring the rights to the song, Hannah Mazetti explained that they will send the 'Last Christmas' dies to a nuclear waste disposal site in Finland "where they will rest for at least two million years".

Mazetti, stressing that she and her husband hold no animosity towards Wham themselves! , stated: “I'm sorry, but that's the way it has to be. We don't hate Wham!, but we hate this song. Because it's played 5,000 times a day, but we felt something had to be done to support people who are suffering like us."

He also noted that reactions to their campaign are mixed. “50% get really angry and 50% get really happy. Some people seem to enjoy listening to the song 500 times a day. And these people are our enemies," he said.

"They said there are worse songs that should be removed before this - like Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' - and that if we don't like it we could wear headphones and that it's weird to want to remove something beautiful to the rest of humanity just because we don't like it,” he added.
