Eurovision 2023: The contest will be held in Liverpool

Liverpool will host Eurovision 2023 on behalf of Ukraine.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will be held at the Liverpool Arena in Liverpool on Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 May (semi-finals) and Saturday 13 May (final).

The BBC, together with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), will organize the Competition in consultation with UA: PBC, Ukraine's public broadcaster and winner of last year's Competition.

Liverpool was selected following a highly competitive nomination process from a number of UK cities, which looked at each city's facilities, capacity to host thousands of visitors, delegations, crews, fans and journalists, infrastructure and the host city's cultural offering which will reflect Ukraine's victory in 2022.

Eurovision Song Contest Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl welcomed the news.

“Liverpool is the perfect place to host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine. The city is synonymous with music and the Liverpool Arena exceeds all the requirements needed to host a global event of this scale,” he said.

"We have been very impressed by the city's passion for embracing the Competition and its comprehensive ideas for putting last year's winners, Ukraine, in the spotlight when thousands of fans visit next May," he continued.

“This will be the first Eurovision Song Contest to be held in the UK in 25 years and, as we work with our host broadcaster, the BBC, to celebrate Ukraine's victory, this unique production promises to be really very special," he noted.

BBC Director General Tim Davie said: “Congratulations to Liverpool. He will be an amazing organizer of the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. Liverpool is such an exciting, warm and vibrant city."

“It is the undisputed capital of pop music and is celebrating the 65th anniversary of its twinning with the Ukrainian city of Odessa. I know the people of Liverpool will welcome Europe – and the rest of the world – with open arms, and together we will create something truly special,” he stressed.

Alongside the announcement of the host city, the EBU released the official logo for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, which features the Ukrainian flag in the heart.

The logo design reflects the fact that although the contest will be held in the UK, it will be held on behalf of Ukraine, the winner of this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Mykola Chernotytskyi, head of the board of UA: PBC, Ukraine's public broadcaster, commented:

"It is symbolic that the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will be held in Liverpool, a sister city of Odessa. Organizing a competition of this level creates extremely demanding conditions. I am sure that the city that is recognized as the capital of pop music will respond to them in the best way and will hold a celebration of music that will amaze both the delegations and the fans of Eurovision".
